AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
CREATES "GREEN
CLASSROOM GLASSHOUSE"
Writtle College in Essex has recently installed
Atlantics R-series boiler as part of their "green classroom" concept.
A new 640m2 glasshouse, will be used for teaching
and for research and considers a variety of environmental
factors including the re-use of water, boiler efficiency
and the type of fuel used.
Writtle College is set in its own 220 hectare estate
with landscaped gardens, glasshouses, equine units,
an animal unit and a farm. These practical facilities
act as a ‘green classroom’ to support
the teaching.
The glasshouse has five separate environment controlled
zones and the decision was taken to install an efficient
oil boiler that had the flexibility to burn either
fossil fuel or a range of biofuel alternatives. This
will provide an opportunity to test the suitability
of different heating fuels from both a practical and
financial perspective.
The chosen boiler was Atlantic Boiler’s R
Series 300kW condensing boiler. The boiler will burn
carbon-neutral rape-seed oil, biodiesel and used
frying oil as well as conventional diesel oil. The
R Series boiler, placed in a series of carefully
monitored installations since 2001, won the coveted
H & V award for technical innovation in 2005.
